Let the Food Be Thy Medicine

Last week I felt the symptoms of cold was developing so I took a proactive approach by stepping up my water intake to keep mucus line moist and about 50ml of freshly squeezed organic pure calamansi juice on empty stomach which is excellent Vitamin C. (Pure calamansi increases alkalinity of the body. If you put water or honey in it becomes acidic) then after 30 minutes I drank half a cup of probiotic.  Did you know that the live cultures of good bacteria fights the growth of disease causing bacteria? (And if you are under antibiotic medication, increasing your intake of probiotic restores your inner eco-system as antibiotic destroys the healthy flora in the gut).

For breakfast I ate a bowl of oats  which is great source of zinc with banana and raisins. The I spiced up my hot drink with organic ginger and honey (spicy food clears congestion and soothes itchy throats). My late Mom always gave us quick natural relief from her old chicken soup recipe which I ate and sprinkled with a good amount of crushed garlic. Garlic is antiviral and antibacterial. I also did a bit of yoga to stretch torso and bring energy to head (decongest sinuses) and open up respiratory tract.  Plus a good exposure to the morning sun gives you a shot of  natural Vitamin D. In no time at all, the entire virus was flushed out of my system naturally!

Our very own local milk

img830Here are the facts:

  • 98% of all milk in the Philippines is imported and only 2% goes to our local Filipino farmers. This milk is sourced and bottled by women farmers in Bulacan whose only link to market is through us and others who support them. But this is not the main reason why you should drink carabao’s milk  but because carabao’s milk has 58% more calcium, 40% more protein,   43% less cholesterol than regular milk!
  • The higher calcium content is excellent in preventing hypertension, maintaining bone health and teeth and controlling obesity.
  • The taste is so pure and fresh, and guaranteed with no hormones and antibiotics compared with those milks in cans and cartons in your grocery shops which are added of sugar and contain chemicals and medicines that were transferred to the milk which contributes to obesity and other diseases.

This is available 2x a week, Wed and Sat at TheVillageGreenShop in the following sizes:

  • 500 ml – P 150.00
  • 750 ml – P225.00
  • 1 litre – P 250.00

We also sell cow’s milk from  local breed.

Quick update from TheVillageGreenShop

  • We are currently experiencing an increase in subscription which we are grateful about.
  • The customers of TheVillageGreenShop are composed of subscribers – 1/3 are “long-time avid organic eaters” – they are also looking to switch to 100% organic and low-impact lifestyle. We fill their food basket each week – from rice to spices.   A third group is partly organic and another third is experimental – they are new converts who are looking to see the difference and impact of eating organic food.
  • We have added a few items in our weekly basket.  Check them out here https://thevillagegreenshop.wordpress.com/2013/06/17/new-items-at-thevillagegreenshop/

Some of you might be shifting gradually to 100% organic not only in food but also in personal products. We are glad we discovered Human Heart Nature.  Please check them out here www.humanheartnature.com. They have values and mission that is quite similar to us so we are happy to work with them and bring their items to TheVillageGreenShop.

We have switched to 100% natural and chemical free shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, body wash, soap, facial cream, etc. Each week we retire a commercial brand and replace them with an organic personal product that contains NO SLS/SLES, ALS/ALES, PEGS, parabens, phthalates, silicones and other harmful chemicals! You can place your order with us at the following details:

  • We are working to label properly all items you buy from us ensuring that you have the right information of the food you eat, how to store and eat them.
  • We are putting in place our plan to ensure reliability and sustainability of supply of produce with increase in volume while being consistent and maintaining the quality of items.
  • We would like to contribute in reducing the earth’s destruction by reusing, recycling and up-cycling used glass bottles. We give a rebate of P1.00 for every return of used bottle of sardines, probiotic, honey, and herb salt or herb cheese to us. You may send it to us anytime or when we deliver/pick your items up. Also you might want to try our tablea made from native local cacao. We add them to our oat meal with raisins for a change and gave us new flavour for breakfast.

We also have red lady papaya. Our customers love it so much because they are sweet! Since we introduced them, it img933has now become staple item each week in our weekly food basket.  There is a great reason to add them to our diet especially in the morning as they are packed with rich sources of antioxidant nutrients such as carotenes, vitamin C and flavonoids; the B vitamins, folate and pantothenic acid; and the minerals, potassium and magnesium; and fiber. Together, these nutrients promote the health of the cardiovascular system and also provide protection against colon cancer. In addition, papaya contains the digestive enzyme, papain, which is used like bromelain, a similar enzyme found in pineapple, to treat sports injuries, other causes of trauma, and allergies.*

Ever wondered where your food comes from and how it was produced?

TheVillageGreenShop is more than just your neighbourhood food delivery of organic produce. We don’t sell food for survival but food that heals and nourishes and gives soul-satisfying flavour. Each product is painstakingly grown on living soil by men and women farmers, small holder family farmers in community supported farms.

Have you ever wondered where your food comes from and how it was produced? We care about these issues by giving you this information.

Our veg, fruits and herbs including salad greens (romaine, arugula, green ice and red sail) are grown organically by small holder family farmers and community farmers in San Jose Tarlac. While the pakbet veg and green leafy ones are tended by family and small holder farmers in Capas Tarlac. They are trained not just in organic farming but in sustainability of food and caring for the earth.

We also ensure that our network of farmers share in the wealth by paying them a moral price for the produce they passionately grow and add more to it by helping build human capability resources that they need in order for them to grow those crisp lettuces, juicy plump tomatoes, and give us those veggie-deliciousness and diversity in our food choices.

We are a campaign platform against toxicity in food, food waste and unsustainable consumption. Please see what we tackle here
