What’s on offer in the mercadillo de comida?

AppetiteforOrganic

We are going to kick start the  “-ber” months merrily by showcasing in the mercadillo what we’ve found from our recent sourcing trip.

Join us as we celebrate abundance of local greens and native veg (yes in spite of flooding and rain), and the best produce from each region in the country!  Have you ever heard of Kalinga Unoy rice? A native told me that unoy means good for you.  Literally it is! This is a special rice variety that was elevated in the Ark of Taste.*  Grows in Kalinga  and harvested once a year!  Excited to bring this to you!   Have you tried Bignay local wine and honey wine? We’ve got this as well and a range of roasted beans: black, green, white and crushed beans of assorted colours… and many more. Really interesting finds!

Please book this in your calendar!

*The Ark of Taste travels the world collecting small-scale quality productions that belong to the cultures, history and traditions of the entire planet: an extraordinary heritage of fruits, vegetables, animal breeds, cheeses, breads, sweets and cured meats…

The Ark was created to point out the existence of these products, draw attention to the risk of their extinction within a few generations, invite everyone to take action to help protect them. In some cases this might be by buying and consuming them, in some by telling their story and supporting their producers, and in others, such as the case of endangered wild species, this might mean eating less or none of them in order to preserve them and favor their reproduction.

A visit to the farm

IMG_1588

Mountain rice

Middle of this week we went to visit a partner-farm of TheVillageGreenShop in Tarlac and as soon as we set foot in the brown ploughed soil we were welcomed by wonderful breeze of fresh crisp air and awesome sight  of greenery around . We don’t want to leave.  As I look into the horizon I remember a John Muir’s quote which I ran across a brilliant nature blog – Earth Station (http://earthstonestation.wordpress.com/2013/08/08/old-mountain-friends/#comment-2909) that says

“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity…”
― John Muir

Absolutely true.

Real food grown on living soil

When I was much younger I remember going to my father’s farm in the countryside. It’s so calming and relaxing.  For that reason, I realise why while I was living in 2 of the big cities in Europe where a good part of my adult life was spent, had to escape to museums and galleries. Not that impressionist works provide a semblance of sunrise from a Degas work or Monet’s hay stock of sunset and Pissarro’s Harvest but such wonderful works provide respite and inspiration.

And nothing is much truer than living soil underneath my feet as I walked into rows of calamansi trees,  moringa trees, banana trees and papaya trees, white corn, and stooping down to marvel at seedlings of different varieties of lettuces and green leafy veg such as kale, spinach, mustard greens etc.

Grass clippings as a mulch for plants. Why? conserves moisture, prevent weed growth, cool the soil and add organic material to the soil.

This is the organic farm that feeds a growing community of subscribers of TheVillageGreenShop in Metro Manila. At the time of our visit the entire staff including the farmers are doing mid-year assessment and planning  for the next year. They are looking at how can they build resilient structure in the farm and ensure the lettuces and veg withstand extreme temperature and stay happy and keep those insects at bay, create diversity in food choices, ensure affordability and accessibility of organic produce…and bring organic produce on the table in every household. One community at a time.

Roger is happy picking calamansi.

More than any kind of farm input it is the human element that matters most like commitment, passion and dedication for good healthy real living food and respect for nature that enables our farmers and the entire team of TheVillageGreenShop produce fresh veg, fruits and greens week after week.
