How industrial food system endangers our health

The Philippine population has reached 100 million.  How are we going to feed this growing population when our farms are taken over by real estate development and testing ground for GMO?

Capitalists and entrepreneurs see the opportunity that tons of profits can be made if food are produced at a massive scale and at lower cost. These so called food entrepreneurs have created food production systems backed by bankers and financiers to speed up and bulk up meat production. Chickens are raised in cramped chicken sheds causing immobility and disease but can grow enormously in 45 or even 21 days.  In food factories, the natural instincts of cows, pigs and chickens are redesigned – cows these days do not eat grass anymore much less seen a blade of grass and yet produce tons and gallons of milk because of constant feeding of hormones and antibiotics so that milk can be produced at a massive scale at cheap cost.

Food has become denatured food products that contribute to diseases. Obesity, cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes are at an all time high in the Philippines but doctors warned us that most of these diseases can be healed or controlled by food – real food.

Real food are fruits and vegetables grown on living soil in season and eaten in season. Animals grow on pasture and fed on grass, table scraps, garden waste and worms. They live out their natural instincts and are mobile to do whatever and wherever they wanted to go and graze.

Soon we will be offering our own native and white chickens, and ducks too including pastured pork.

Against GMO

Food Hub

We are creating Food Hubs in various communities in the metropolis. The objective is very simple – we would like to bring local, seasonal and sustainable produce with no pesticides, no fungicides, no GMO, no hormones and antibiotics in every home. Recently, a subscriber-friend of ours signed up to become a food drop in her community in Quezon City and part of Greenhills. Working together with our customers and subscribers who are as passionate as ours is a brilliant way to increase our campaign, outreach in other communities and access of organic produce grown by local and community farmers. And it makes this campaign a win-win situation for us all because we are able to create bigger impact and enable our food hubbers to increase their weekly food staples of organic items through the discount we offer to them. You might want to eat healthy food everyday or gradually shift to 100% organic, and by becoming a food drop in your location, the discount might enable. Contact us at 0927 675 5199/villagegreenshop@btinternet.com.

Lovely to meet you at the Mercato Day

Hello,

It was lovely to see our subscriber-friends, neighbours and new faces at the Mercato in Lexington.  And also to our friends who came from afar and braved the rain to see us, it was wonderful and we are incredibly grateful!  We hope the warm choco rice drink and the taco and tortilla with hot sauce and salsa provided relief and comfort.

To those who enquired about our range of leafy veg, salad greens and meat products and other items, you will know what’s available by checking our site and our weekly email and text blast about our harvest offerings each week.  You may also contact us at 0927 675 5199/villagegreenshop@btinternet.com.  And to those who enquired about our range of dairy, we have probiotic, carabao’s milk (plain and choco), mozarella, chevre and improved kesong puti.  If you want any of these items this weekend or week after week you may subscribe or place your order until Tuesday, 12:00nn. Also if there’s anything you particularly like or not or you are looking for items you would want included in our product range please give us a shout anytime!

We are surprised as some of you are that they can get easy access of a range of sustainably grown produce right within this village.  We are happy to serve you and it’s just so happen that we live around here and so we thought our campaign for healthy food starts at “home”.

Last note,  to those who asked us when and how they can get their weekly food basket, please check out our market days below:

Delivery days

Pre-order 11:00 nn cut off

And finally, we are happy that you bought products from a social enterprise we are supporting called Custom Home – they are expert-makers of curtains, seat covers, throw pillows, drapes and bedding (duvet covers, bed skirts and throws) including all kinds of canvass bags and backpacks. They are worth supporting because not only that they offer honest to goodness work at reasonable price but would like to showcase their talent by setting up their own small business to move away from subsistence living to hopefully a sustainable life. If you are looking to have new curtains or do makeover this Christmas, please keep Custom Home in your radar.  You may contact 0926 739 4997 for enquiries.

Many thanks.

A visit to the farm

IMG_1588

Mountain rice

Middle of this week we went to visit a partner-farm of TheVillageGreenShop in Tarlac and as soon as we set foot in the brown ploughed soil we were welcomed by wonderful breeze of fresh crisp air and awesome sight  of greenery around . We don’t want to leave.  As I look into the horizon I remember a John Muir’s quote which I ran across a brilliant nature blog – Earth Station (http://earthstonestation.wordpress.com/2013/08/08/old-mountain-friends/#comment-2909) that says

“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity…”
― John Muir

Absolutely true.

IMG_1582

Real food grown on living soil

When I was much younger I remember going to my father’s farm in the countryside. It’s so calming and relaxing.  For that reason, I realise why while I was living in 2 of the big cities in Europe where a good part of my adult life was spent, had to escape to museums and galleries. Not that impressionist works provide a semblance of sunrise from a Degas work or Monet’s hay stock of sunset and Pissarro’s Harvest but such wonderful works provide respite and inspiration.

And nothing is much truer than living soil underneath my feet as I walked into rows of calamansi trees,  moringa trees, banana trees and papaya trees, white corn, and stooping down to marvel at seedlings of different varieties of lettuces and green leafy veg such as kale, spinach, mustard greens etc.

This is the organic farm that feeds a growing community of subscribers of TheVillageGreenShop in Metro Manila. At the time of our visit the entire staff including the farmers are doing mid-year assessment and planning  for the next year. They are looking at how can they build resilient structure in the farm and ensure the lettuces and veg withstand extreme temperature and stay happy and keep those insects at bay, create diversity in food choices, ensure affordability and accessibility of organic produce…and bring organic produce on the table in every household. One community at a time.

Roger is happy picking calamansi.

More than any kind of farm input it is the human element that matters most like commitment, passion and dedication for good healthy real living food and respect for nature that enables our farmers and the entire team of TheVillageGreenShop produce fresh veg, fruits and greens week after week.
