We are more than just a food company.  We care about people and our environment.  Our superior quality products are carefully selected to make a difference to your health, lifestyle and our environment.

As a small start-up food company we have big goals.

The VillageGreenShop aims to reduce food miles by sourcing directly and locally and encouraging consumers to eat local and seasonal, buy collaboratively, and we enable you to make the right and ethical choices in consumption.

We champion grow your own veg and herbs. We aim to bring farming in every home and space in the city and regenerate derelict, unused and abandoned pockets of property and transform them into green spaces or community allotment urban farms. It opens the city for more innovation and keeps our community safer.

TheVillageGreenShop champions community development by providing access to skills and training to youths not in education and employment on urban farming. We can make a difference in the lives of people who would otherwise get trap into deeper cycles of crime and poverty.  So this is an inclusive means to an end in creating safer communities.

What is bio-dynamic method in organic farming?

The Village Green Shop is committed low carbon food social enterprise that brings you quality food you can trust. We are passionate in bringing you soul-satisfying experience, vibrancy and fullness of flavour and richness in nutrition that is possible only when you put love and care and bio-dynamic farming practices in growing and raising vegetables and livestock.

Majority of our food items are bio-dynamic directly sourced and ethically produced local and seasonal vegetables, salad greens, herbs, and meat including dairy products stringently selected according to our strict criteria of NO PESTICIDES, NO FUNGICIDES, NO GMO IN FEEDS, and NO HORMONES AND NO ANTIBIOTICS in food.

Our clients are asking what bio-dynamic food is. We did a bit of research and here’s what we found-

Like organic farming, bio-dynamic farms stress biological methods in regard to humane treatment of animals,food quality and soil health (such as green manures, cover crops and composting). However, bio-dynamics takes it a bit further. In addition to organic biological practices, bio-dynamic practices also incorporate metaphysical aspects of farming. You read that correctly — metaphysical. Farmers who practice a bio-dynamic approach consider the life force of the farm. Think of it this way: Conventional farming is to bio-dynamic farming as conventional medicine is to homeopathic.*

We checked how biodynamic farming started and truly we felt a strong sense of affinity to the principles developed by Dr Rudolf Steiner an Austrian social activist who developed the biodynamic method in farming. This method stresses a diversified, balanced farm ecosystem that generates health and fertility as much as possible from within the farm itself. Preparations made from fermented manure, minerals and herbs are used to help restore and harmonize the vital life forces of the farm and to enhance the nutrition, quality and flavor of the food being raised. Biodynamic practitioners also recognize and strive to work in cooperation with the subtle influences of the wider cosmos on soil, plant and animal health.**

Inspired by Steiner’s holistic insights , most biodynamic initiatives seek to embody triple bottom line approaches (ecological, social and economic sustainability).  Biodynamic practitioners seek wider engagement with other farms and across various organizations to strengthen delivery of good health and increased well-being such as schools, hospitals, medical and wellness facilities, restaurants, hotels, homes for social therapy and other organizations.**

We think this is what is needed in farming and agriculture at the back of phenomenal challenges such as climate change, food poverty, malnutrition and food waste as societies and governments seek innovative ways to address unrelenting rate in population growth and increased pace in urbanization.

Basic Facts About TheVillageGreenShop

  • All produce in our shop are all organic.
  • Some of our basic food items such as rice, chicken, mix of salad greens, herbs, assorted local veggies, and fresh milk are produced by women farmers, youth-farmers not in education and employment but trained in farming, smallholder farmers, farmers coop and community supported farms so they can invest in education, health, livelihood, and improve their prospects for the future. This food basket is seasonal and we will let you know.
  • All items in the food list are seasonal and local products so some items might not be available at the time of order, and due to heat and rain it affects harvest and price. (Probably you have the same questions as we do – how might we embed resilient systems in agriculture to create sustainability in production and therefore price?)
  • Order and delivery schedules:  You can order anytime but ensure to take note of delivery schedules. We deliver Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and Mondays so please place your order before those days not later than 5 pm.
  • Minimum order is P3, 000.00 for both individual and group-buy hence we encourage people to group buy so we can be flexible about the minimum order.  However there are items that have no min order like our weekly food basket which are sent to you weekly via email.
  • Why do we encourage people to group buy? Simply because an individual doesn’t make as much savings or impact as a community. As we are low carbon food distribution system we can reduce carbon emission together if by the same amount of fuel in transporting these items we deliver to as many people in one location each time! The savings we don’t keep but is passed on to you as discount according to volume/frequency of orders each community makes!
  • What is the difference between low carbon food distribution system vs. traditional supermarket food shopping? Did you know that if you buy produce in a supermarket you’ll find that transportation is most of the cost? We champion #Low-Impact-Lifestyle by bringing you organic and seasonal produce only, encouraging you to buy locally and collaboratively while protecting your health and the health of our planet. For many of us we simply ignore that we eat out-of -season fruits or veggies or don’t bother enough to know that our favourite fruit or veggie was forced to mature using harmful carcinogenic chemicals or the meat we consume is boosted of hormones and antibiotics.  Can you imagine what those chemicals and processes do to our body and to our soil?

The VillageGreenShop was created to respond to that challenge and bring you bio-dynamically produced meat, dairy, and organic fruits, herbs and veggies; we also tell you where your food comes from and how it was produced. We don’t want to compromise your health and the health of our planet.

Did you know that if you buy produce in a supermarket you’ll find that transportation is most of the cost?

Make it low impact by buying local and collaboratively, eating seasonal, and supporting ethical shops that enables you to make the right choices.

  • Food poverty

Growth in population will come from developing countries therefore much of the demand for food will come from this region but urbanization is accelerating at a rapid pace as reported by FAO. It maybe simplistic to say that one of the solutions is to grow your own food or harness unused spaces in the city for productive spaces.  Bill Mollison, founder of permaculture, might be correct that…” solutions remain embarrassingly simple”. How might we turn consumers as co-producers?

TheVillageGreenShop aims to bring farming in every home and space in the city by regenerating derelict, unused and abandoned properties and lawns at home into green spaces for community allotment farms. We transform them into productive raised beds, vertical or horizontal soil-free or on ground garden where you can grow your own vegetables and cultivate your small worm compost system.   • Food waste

Millions of people die of malnutrition and yet mountains of food appallingly end up in our landfill. According to Gustavson in her report to FAO “in low-income countries, most loss occurs during production, while in developed countries much food – about 100 kilograms (220 lb) per person and year – is wasted at the consumption stage’.

At home, if you open your fridge, how much of the food you buy you bin each week including school lunches of your children, how about in restaurants, hotels, shops, wet markets, supermarkets…etc.

How might we raise awareness that our decisions and habits have consequent impacts to our environment?

We bottle up perishable fruits and veggies before it gets discarded. It makes sense in a world where food waste end up in our landfill and others die of malnutrition or hunger.

We foodcycle items approaching sell by date that may otherwise be thrown to the garbage by distributing them to homes and shelters for orphans and old people.

If we plan our food shopping smartly to avoid wastage, and producers target issues in the supply chain to reduce if not avoid wastage, and policy makers and government mobilise their political will, we can make a difference.
